Innovation and Intellectual Property Management (IIPM) Laboratory

Prof. Tietze was invited to provide a keynote at the 21st Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum - SICIP Sub Forum. The theme of the Forum was "Innovation Research Powered by Intellectual Property Data". The Forum was organised by the Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property at Tongji University

In his keynote, Prof. Tietze shared recent findings from an ongoing collaborative project with colleagues from the Fraunhofer INT and IAO, the OECD and Technische Universitaet Ingolstadt. It was titled "Conceptualizing Disruptive Innovation Paths, Patent Zero and Patent-Data Based Operationalization ". A working paper is available for download here. Other keynotes were provided by Prof. Dietmar Harhoff (Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich) and Prof. Kazuyuki Motohashi (University of Tokyo).

Prof. Tietze says: "It was a pleasure being able to visit Shanghai again. It has been fantastic to learn about their diverse research and teaching initiatives of the International College of Intellectual Property at Tongji University, clearly a leading IP research centre in China."

Following the event on Saturday, on Sunday a workshop took place at Suzhou, followed by a visit to the Patent Examination Cooperation Jiangsu Center of the Patent Office on Monday. During that visit, delegates had the chance to hear about the Center's efforts to use AI for better managing the patent examination workflow, followed by discussions about other AI use cases.

The discussions highlighted the potential threat from AI-generated applications that could potentially "flood" the patent system leading to an arm's race with patent offices embracing AI to counteract the increased inflow through more efficient processes, while AI should be used to also help with increasing the patent quality.
