Prof. Dr. Frank Tietze
![]() | I was appointed Cambridge’s first Professor of Innovation Engineering in 2022. Within the Department of Engineering, I lead the Innovation & IP Management (IIPM) Laboratory as part of the IfM's Centre for Technology Management (CTM). My research examines the strategic role of intellectual property (IP) in innovation (eco)systems and processes, with particular emphasis on cumulative and distributed technologies, data- and AI-enabled IP analytics and management, and digital infrastructures for licensing and royalty governance. A central theme of my work concerns sustainability transitions, including the development, diffusion and governance of green and climate technologies and circular-economy innovations. I have secured substantial competitive research funding from Horizon Europe, UKRI and other major international programmes. My work is published in leading journals including Research Policy, Nature Biotechnology, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Technovation and World Patent Information. Beyond academic research, I collaborate with industry, government agencies and international organisations on IP strategy, innovation policy and the design of emerging digital licensing models. I contribute to executive education and have developed and delivered training programmes for senior R&D, engineering and technology leaders. I teach and supervise across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in innovation and intellectual property at the intersection of engineering, innovation and management of IP. My academic training in Germany and Sweden combines engineering, management and economics, providing an interdisciplinary foundation for my research.
