Professor Tietze was recently invited to deliver an "IP Strategy and Innovation" module as part of the Tsinghua-WIPO Joint Master’s Degree Program in Intellectual Property and Innovation Policy (MIPIP) hosted at the Law Faculty of Tsinghua University in Beijing.
The intensive three-day course engaged a diverse cohort of 18 students, including PhD candidates specializing in IP law and international exchange students. The module was build around the IP Roadmapping methodology, a structured visual framework designed to align business objectives with IP actions. Students were tasked with developing an integrated IP strategy for AutoX, a fictional automotive firm navigating a complex 10-year transition from traditional manufacturing to electric vehicle (EV) production, car-sharing services, and multi-brand refurbishing.
Throughout the program, theoretical concepts were balanced with practical industry insights. Students heard from esteemed guest lecturers Dr. Alistair Scott (VP and Head of IP at Airbus), who discussed freedom of design in aerospace, and Dr. Dora Luo (Waterwood Investment), who provided a private equity perspective on IP assets.
The course culminated in final group presentations, where teams synthesized their findings into IP strategy narratives. These presentations demonstrated how specific IP management functions, such as acquisition, maintenance, exploitation, and enforcement, could be aligned to support a firm's long-term competitive vision. This successful session further advances the IIPM Laboratory’s mission to develop strategic IP management capabilities within global innovation systems.
